General Motors committed heavily to battery-electric vehicles several years ago and now is suffering the financial pain of converting manufacturing capacity from internal-combustion vehicles to EVs as that market growth has slowed dramatically. It’s been an expensive journey, as General Motors recorded a total of $7.6 billion in EV-related charges in the second half of 2025.
