A new lawsuit against Samsung has been filed in the US, and it’s targeting the company’s foldable phones. This will become a rather serious problem for the company if it holds up in court.
What’s this all about? Well, Lepton Computing LLC has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Samsung Electronics and its US subsidiary. The lawsuit has been filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.
A new lawsuit is targeting almost every foldable phone from Samsung
Lepton Computing LLC claims that the Galaxy Z Fold, Galaxy Z Flip, and Galaxy Z TriFold phones infringe on a portfolio of patents, 9 of them, to be exact. These patents are tied to foldable smartphone tech.
The filing mentions patents that cover a wide range of enabling technologies that are used in modern foldables. Those include patents related to hardware structure, hinge design, display protection, and software behavior.
The complaint also mentioned internal components and how they’re arranged within tight spatial constraints. That includes sensors, magnets, cameras, and speakers, which all have to coexist with a flexible OLED panel that bends within a controlled radius.
Even some software is mentioned
In regards to software, App Continuity is mentioned. That’s a feature that enables a seamless transition from one display to another. In other words, you can continue where you left off when you fold or unfold the phone.
Lepton also mentioned an early prototype device called the ‘Lepton Flex’, which the company says was the first foldable smartphone developed in the US.
You may wonder which phones are a part of Lepton’s lawsuit? Well, all devices ranging from the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Flip 3 to the latest foldables from Samsung. So… quite a few foldable smartphones.
If Lepton ends up winning this, it will be a big problem for Samsung. There’s always a chance that the two companies will settle, and it’s actually the most plausible outcome if Samsung determines there is merit to these allegations and a chance it’ll lose the court battle.
