The process of signing up for a new app is finally getting the upgrade it deserves. Have you ever felt the frustration of leaving an app to hunt for a six-digit code in your inbox? Well, finally there is a solution. Google just announced a new update to Android‘s Credential Manager that allows apps to verify your Gmail address automatically, potentially ending the era of One-Time Passwords (OTPs) and “magic links” for good.
Android’s new Verified Email system for app sign-ups kills OTP codes
This technology works by using a secure, cryptographically verified credential that already exists on your Android device. The system will no longer force you into a “verification loop” where you switch between your app and your email. Now, it can automatically handle the confirmation behind the scenes.
When an app needs to verify your identity, a native window appears at the bottom of your screen. This system sheet then explains what information the app is requesting, such as your verified email or profile picture. From there, you can send the data to the app right away by tapping “Agree and continue.” This lets you move forward without wasting a single second.
There are multiple everyday scenarios where the feature is useful. For example, it makes it easy to recover lost accounts without having to use recovery links or deal with external verification methods.
This tool also adds extra security shields for actions involving sensitive data. The list includes changing your profile settings or making a purchase, among others. Instead of requiring a clunky SMS or email code, apps can trigger a quick, low-friction re-authentication step.
Privacy and compatibility
Privacy remains a core focus of this new system. Even though the process is much faster, you remain in total control of your data. The app cannot access your verified email without your explicit consent. Plus, Google designed the system to be transparent about every piece of information shared.
Currently, the new verified email credential system for Android’s Credential Manager is available for personal Google Accounts. Now the ball is in the court of third-party developers to implement it in their apps.
