XR glasses are the next big thing right now, with Google preparing to launch its Gemini glasses later this year, Samsung preparing a pair of XR glasses too, and now we’re seeing…Gucci? Apparently, Gucci is planning to launch a pair of Android XR glasses too, according to a report from Reuters.
Kering CEO Luca de Meo revealed that Gucci is developing these in partnership with Google, which means that they are running on the Android XR platform, and the software should be similar to what Google and Samsung are using on their upcoming glasses.
Details on these new glasses are pretty sparse right now, but they are expected to include cameras, microphones, and speakers.
We’ve had the chance to demo Google’s Android XR glasses a couple of times now at Google I/O last year, and MWC last month. And they are progressing quite nicely. As expected, Google is relying pretty heavily on Gemini for these glasses, and it works quite well. Using it for Google Maps, Google Photos, and other Google products. Unfortunately, none of the demos have involved third-party apps or services just yet. Likely because they aren’t ready yet.
Gucci wants in, on the wearable market
Kering, the parent company of Gucci, is making this move as part of a broader strategy to more than double its operating profit margin. Kering realizes that wearable technology is becoming bigger and bigger, and they want a slice of that cake.
Samsung has already partnered with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker for its glasses, with Meta having partnered with Ray-Ban and Oakley’s parent company EssilorLuxotica.
With smartphones being pretty mature at this point, we’re seeing a lot of companies moving more into wearables, a space that Huawei has already done pretty well in – at least in the markets they are able to sell in.
