The thing about software interfaces is that they evolve over time. This doesn’t mean the previous design was bad or wrong, but as the way we use our apps change, so does the UI. Now, for those who are using YouTube Music, a recent update is bringing a redesign to the Now Playing interface.
YouTube Music Now Playing gets a redesign
As 9to5Google reports, the YouTube Music Now Play has undergone a redesign. What’s changed, you ask? The most obvious probably has to be the cover art. In the new design, the cover art under Now Playing is larger, which is kind of nice if you like looking at the art while listening to your music.
Also, the “Song” and “Video” switcher now uses icons, and the progress bar has switched up from being a thin line to a thicker line. It also gets thicker when you tap and scrub. Another change some users might notice is the removal of “Lyrics” and “Related.” The bottom part of Now Playing will show your Up Next queue, which you can reveal by swiping anywhere within the player.
If you want to see the lyrics, you’ll find them after the thumbs-up and thumbs-down capsule. You can also find the Related section by tapping on the song title. Last but not least, the update introduces a new dual-pane design that shows the cover art, controls, and what’s next.
Just one of many changes
That being said, this update is just one of several changes Google is bringing to the platform. More recently, we saw the introduction of AI, which can generate playlists based on your vibes. That being said, not everyone is a fan. While AI can be helpful, users are discovering that it ends up recommending AI slop.
As some of you know, there are plenty of AI models these days that can generate complete songs using prompts. It’s admittedly very impressive from a technical standpoint. However, many musicians and artists who have poured decades into their craft are finding it a little insulting.
In any case, these UI changes are rolling out as part of YouTube Music version 9.14 for Android and version 9.15 for iOS. It is a server-side update, so just make sure you have the latest version and you’re good to go.
