
T-Mobile, the “Uncarrier” as we once knew it, is dead. The phone carrier is once again pushing customers on its older legacy plans to its newer Go5G Plus lineup, likely in an effort to charge these loyal customers more money. And in a lot of cases, they are not actually asking for permission before making them switch.
According to users posting on T-Mobile’s own support website, as well as the r/TMobile sub-reddit, most subscribers on the Magenta Plus, MAX, ONE Plus, and Sprint Max plans are being moved over to Go5G Plus. Other plans, like the 55+ and First Responder, are being shifted to the equivalent Go5G Plus versions. While the base ONE plan with the Plus promo hasn’t been affected, it’s still unclear if those customers will keep the KickBack program, which T-Mobile officially ended in 2018.
T-Mobile says this is a good change
T-Mobile, as you’d expect, is framing this as a good thing. Saying that customers won’t pay extra and will get access to better device upgrade deals, along with 50GB of hotspot data, and more high-speed data in Canada and Mexico. T-Mobile is also claiming that free lines, discounts, and other perks will remain.
The problem with this is that customers didn’t get a choice. They woke up one day and were on a totally different plan. This is very different from the “Uncarrier” attitude T-Mobile had under CEO John Legere, a few years ago. It wasn’t that long ago that T-Mobile promised that only customers could change their plan.
But that’s not the worst of it. If T-Mobile can migrate you to Go5G Plus today, what’s stopping them from pushing you to another plan? One that doesn’t have taxes and fees included. This is a real worry for customers, and could result in some bad news for T-Mobile at its next quarterly earnings.
It’s not all bad news, though. Customers who were protected with the original Price Lock guarantee haven’t been hit with price increases and haven’t been migrated to new plans.
