In the past few weeks, users of the Google Messages app on Android phones have been dealing with an unknown issue that completely broke the popular photomoji functionality. However, the latest beta version of the Google Messages app has fixed the error related to the photomoji feature.
All Google Messages users will receive a fix for the photomoji error soon
The photomoji feature in the Google Messages Android app allows users to turn their personal photos into reusable stickers or reactions for their regular text chats. However, lately, when Google Messages users try to access the photomoji feature, it shows an error dialogue. It only reads that “Something happened” with the functionality and tells users to try restarting the app to fix it.
Several user reports on Reddit and Google forums suggest that restarting the device doesn’t fix the photomoji error. “I cleared cache, app data, uninstalled and then reinstalled the app, force closed, toggled RCS off/on after waiting a minute or so, rebooted etc. to no avail… As an aside, I lost every single one I ever created as well after clearing data”. wrote a user on the Google Support forums.
However, Google is actively deploying a fix via the beta channel for the Google Messages app. As per reports, users who have received the “messages.android_20260403_00_RC00” update are confirming that the feature is back up and running.
The photomoji error on Google Messages is affecting users across the globe
The issue seems to be widespread and affects devices from multiple major brands, including Google, Samsung, and OnePlus. Users of flagship phones like the Pixel 10 Pro XL, Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy S25 Ultra, and the OnePlus 12 are also having issues with the photomoji feature.
Since Google has already started fixing the photomoji error in the beta versions of the Google Messages app, a release for the stable channel isn’t too far. If you use this feature a lot and can’t wait for the stable release, you can always sign up for the beta app from the Play Store.
