T-Mobile did update parts of its network recently and retired some of the old security standards used by some older Android and iOS devices in that process. This apparently helps keep the network faster and safer. However, the change impacts select older devices on both T-Mobile’s network and any prepaid provider that runs on it. Reports point out that every device made after 2017 remains unaffected. So, if you’re holding on to your old phone, now you have a reason (or probably another reason) to upgrade.
T-Mobile’s latest security standard update may cause issues on older devices
T-Mobile and its partners began warning users weeks before making the change last week. However, judging by the number of Reddit and social media posts from users reporting issues or asking why their phones aren’t working properly anymore, it doesn’t look like everyone has received the message. This seems to be impacting phones made before 2017.
If your device is affected, you may still be able to make voice calls and basic texts. However, you won’t be able to manage call forwarding, call waiting, caller ID, or fixed dialing numbers through device settings. Additionally, users may have issues sending larger multimedia files (photos/videos), though data should mostly work fine.
Upgrading is a practical solution
If you don’t see call forwarding, call waiting, and caller ID as major deal breakers, you can probably live without them for a while. But upgrading seems like a practical solution and the way to go. This is considering that older phones are usually vulnerable to newer security threats. Most importantly, they’ll still be running an older version of the OS, which will eventually lead to losing app support.Â
Meanwhile, Mint Mobile, which runs on the T-Mobile Network, in an update said that it will reach out to users if its records show that they’re using an impacted device.Â
