The Steam Deck 2 is almost assuredly coming at some point, and a new rumor believes the launch is going to happen sometime in 2028. This could put the launch of Valve’s second handheld right in line with Sony’s PS6 and PS6 handheld, as well as the Project Helix Xbox console. Some rumors state that those may still launch in 2027 during the holiday season. Other rumors believe the launch will be in at least 2028. So, there’s a chance that the Steam Deck 2 could be competing with Sony’s handheld.
Valve has yet to officially confirm a Steam Deck 2 is coming, nor has it mentioned anything about when it would release a follow-up to the Steam Deck. However, it has said that it plans to do future handhelds, it just won’t be releasing them on a short launch cycle. Instead, Valve wants to wait for more meaningful leaps in performance and hardware before it puts out a Steam Deck successor. The original Steam Deck is now four years old, having launched in February of 2022. That would make 2028 a perfect launch window for the Steam Deck 2, as there will certainly have been meaningful leaps in performance by then.
The Steam Deck 2 launch rumor also mentions details about the chipset
A big thing with the Steam Deck is that Valve worked with AMD to fit it with a custom APU. This worked in the Steam Deck’s favor in quite a few ways, but it was also a little limiting. According to KeplerL2 on neogaf, that isn’t going to be the case with the Steam Deck 2. Valve is reportedly going to be going with a more standardized AMD chip for the next handheld as opposed to something completely custom.
This could open the door for a few benefits on Valve’s end, such as more variety of options during manufacturing, better pricing, etc., but it could also end up being a huge benefit for the user as well. Since these are still just rumors it’s important to take these claims with a grain of salt, as they’re not certainties. The 2028 timing does fit within Valve’s plan though.
