One of BMW’s most important new vehicles, the iX3 SUV, is off to an encouraging start since being revealed last year. Initial orders for the SUV have been strong, it has class-leading range and charging specs, and even the challenging design impressed us in the metal. To add to the iX3’s early accomplishments, it has been named the World Car of the Year and World Electric Vehicle in the 2026 edition of the World Car Awards. The BMW saw off strong challengers from Hyundai, Nissan, and Mercedes-Benz to scoop these two prestigious awards.

First Neue Klasse Model Wins Over 98 Journalists

BMW
The iX3 was the first new BMW from the Neue Klasse platform, making it distinct from the gas-powered X3. It was followed by the i3 electric sedan, and the iX3’s winning ways bode well for the electric 3 Series.
This year’s World Car Awards saw 98 journalists from 33 countries independently assess various vehicles. The iX3 beat out the Hyundai Palisade and Nissan Leaf for the World Car of the Year title, and won the World Electric Vehicle category over the Leaf and Mercedes-Benz CLA. Another BMW, the M2 CS, was a finalist in the World Performance Car category but lost that one to the Hyundai Ioniq 6 N. This is BMW’s second World Car of the Year win after the E90 3 Series won the award in 2006.
“We are happy with this fantastic accolade for the BMW iX3, the first representative of our Neue Klasse,” said Mike Reichelt, Head of Neue Klasse BMW. “The BMW iX3 marks the beginning of a new era at BMW – in terms of design language, range, charging capacity as well as driver assistance – and BMW Panoramic iDrive. Above all, the BMW iX3 represents the next generation of Sheer Driving Pleasure powered by the Heart of Joy. The innovations from the Neue Klasse will benefit our entire product portfolio.”

A New Benchmark For BMW EVs

BMW
The new iX3’s battery technology and charging speeds set new standards for BMW EVs. It’s not just a revolutionary EV, but also a revolutionary BMW, as its overall design and interior control concept set the blueprint for a new generation of BMWs.
Thanks to its 800-volt architecture, the iX3 supports charging at up to 400 kW, so is capable of adding 230 miles of range in just 10 minutes. It has an impressive 400 miles of range, while the 50 xDrive variant produces 463 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque from its dual motors. It will sprint to 60 mph in under five seconds, and initial driving impressions in other markets suggest it’s great to drive.
The exterior design marks a move away from the infamous big-grille era for BMW. The surfaces are smoother and less cluttered, and the new vertical grille draws inspiration from the original Neue Klasse models from the 1960s. Inside, a new Panoramic Vision system places key driving information in a wide, slim display below the windshield. It’s a completely new way of interacting with your BMW.
The combination of these attributes has impressed the judges enough to award the iX3 the World Car of the Year title for 2026.
What It Means
BMW
Developing an all-new vehicle from the ground up is always a gamble, and the risk increases when the user interface and design language take a manufacturer in a new direction, too. BMW knows this all too well, having spent years toning down the design cues and original iDrive system introduced on the derided E65 7 Series. The signs suggest that the iX3 won’t suffer the same fate. Despite all that’s new, the electric SUV’s award-winning start raises hopes for future Neue Klasse models. It looks interesting, nails the basics of a good EV, and also moves BMW into a new era of design, all of which means the next generation of BMWs will be worth the wait.
