If you own an electric vehicle (EV), you may have encountered range anxiety before a long trip in the past. You keep one eye on the road and the other on your remaining range. The moment your battery dips, every charger on Google Maps suddenly starts mattering a lot more. Google is aware of this, which is why Maps on Android Auto is reportedly getting smarter EV trip planning.
Google Maps brings AI-powered battery predictions and smarter trip planning across hundreds Android Auto EV models
Today, Google announced that it is rolling out AI-powered battery prediction feature across 16 Android Auto EV brands. The company says it will use AI with advanced energy models that analyze car details, like battery weight and size. Additionally, the battery prediction feature will also take Google Maps’ real-time traffic data, road elevation, and weather into account for better trip planning.
The new smarter trip planning feature is available for over 350 Android Auto EV models across 16 popular EV brands operating in the US. The list includes Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, FIAT, Genesis, Hyundai, Jaguar, Kia, Lexus, Lucid, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche, Subaru, Toyota, and Volkswagen.
In case you are wondering, here’s how the Google Maps Android Auto EV trip planning works in real life. First, you will need to add your vehicle’s make and model in the Google Maps app on your smartphone. Next, add your destination in the car. After that, Google Maps will display the expected battery usage. If you want to get suggestions about EV charging stations along your route, make sure to add your current charging level.
Availability of the new feature will expand to more EV brands and models, soon
Not to forget, you can also adjust your preferred state of charge in Google Maps upon arrival on a compatible Android Auto EV model. This is useful if you want to arrive at your destination with a certain percentage of remaining charge. Google Maps will then adjust your trip plan and add more EV charging stations if required.
Do note that you’ll need compatible Android Auto EV models and Google Maps app version 25.44 or newer to get battery predictions and smarter trip planning. Moreover, Google has also confirmed that the feature is rolling out to compatible EV models from the aforementioned brands. If your EV’s brand isn’t up there, don’t worry; Google will expand the support soon.
