A major data breach has hit Russell Cellular, one of Verizon’s largest authorized retailers. Threat actors have stolen a massive 61GB database containing the personal information of over six million Verizon consumers and employees. This stolen data of Verizon customers recently appeared on a popular hacking forum, where the hackers have put it up for sale for a surprisingly low price.
Hackers have put the data of millions of Verizon customers on sale for just $1,200
Hackers are selling the data of more than 6.3 million Verizon consumers for a low price of just $1,200. As per a report by Cybernews, the hackers stole a lot of specific details about Verizon consumers. The leak includes full names, phone numbers, email addresses, and account numbers. The threat actors also took device details like IMEI serial numbers, tracking numbers, and specific phone plans of Verizon users.
It’s worth mentioning that things are worse for Russell Cellular employees. The hackers stole their usernames, passwords, and system access levels. Notably, the company saves some passwords as plain text, making it very easy for attackers to log directly into internal company systems.
Hackers can run targeted scams using the leaked information
The latest Verizon data leak creates major problems for anyone on the list. Cybercriminals can use stolen emails and phone numbers to run targeted scams. They might pretend to be employees of Verizon or Russell Cellular to trick customers into handing over credit card numbers or other sensitive account details. The huge amount of information in the latest attack makes these fake messages look very real.
For employees, leaked passwords can be a huge security risk. If Verizon or Russell Cellular employees reuse the same passwords for their bank accounts or social media, the threat actors can easily break into those, too. This puts both the company’s network and individual lives at risk.
It’s worth adding that Verizon is aware of the new data leak and is actively looking into the situation. As of now, neither Verizon nor Russell Cellular has confirmed what kind of damage this leak has caused publicly.
If you purchased a device from Russell Cellular, watch out for any suspicious text messages or emails. Also, make sure to change your passwords before the companies sort this out.
