Samsung seems to be moving forward with its plans to introduce its own credit card to the United States market. A recent application filing from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) reveals that the brand applied to trademark the name “Samsung Galaxy Card” for a credit card. It marks the first official confirmation of a product name for the financial service Samsung has reportedly been developing for multiple years.
Samsung has filed a trademark for a Galaxy credit card in the US
The trademark application filed by Samsung specifically describes an “electronically encoded credit card”. The language of the credit card trademark strongly indicates the Samsung Galaxy Card will directly integrate into the brand’s existing Samsung Wallet app. Thanks to the integration, users will be able to manage their bank accounts. They can also track spending and make touch payments right from their devices, like phones and smartwatches.
Last year, some reports indicated that the Korean tech giant was in active talks with the UK-based consumer bank Barclays to introduce a credit line in the US. This is not the first time we have heard about this, as the brand has been exploring a branded credit card concept since 2018. Now, the trademark application suggests the project looks closer to reality.
Samsung will be taking on the Apple Card ecosystem with its own credit card
Samsung appears to be looking to replicate Apple Card’s success for its own consumer base. Apple Card provides users with a physical titanium card, which provides perks like three percent daily cash back on hardware purchases. By offering its users a proprietary credit card, Samsung could reward them for buying phones, tablets, and other smart home appliances.
Samsung filed the trademark application with the USPTO for the Galaxy credit card on February 12. For those unaware, the trademark applications typically take 12-18 months to move from submission to final approval. So, don’t expect the brand’s credit card service to go live any time soon. However, the trademark is a clear sign that Samsung is serious about expanding into this segment.
