OpenAI’s video generation tool, Sora, has spent the last several months living in its own dedicated space. Since its standalone debut in September 2025, it has gained attention for its realistic video clips. Yet, it has remained separate from the company’s most famous interface. Well, that may be about to change. According to a recent report by The Information, OpenAI plans to integrate the Sora AI model directly into ChatGPT, allowing users to generate high-quality video through a simple conversation.
OpenAI’s next big leap: Sora AI video generation model to hit ChatGPT
This move mirrors how OpenAI integrated DALL-E for image generation last year. Sora will continue to exist as a standalone application for dedicated creators.
Sora currently offers different levels of service. Free users usually have a daily limit on generations. Meanwhile, Pro and Business subscribers have more freedom. ChatGPT Plus and Business users still have some limitations, though. For example, clips can only be 480p resolution and last no longer than 10 seconds.
The timing of this potential rollout comes as OpenAI continues to improve ChatGPT’s functionality. On March 10, the platform added interactive visual modules to help students learn about math and science. Adding video generation to this mix could transform the chatbot into a versatile multimedia engine.
Catching up with rivals
The decision to fold Sora into ChatGPT isn’t happening in a vacuum. Competition among AI giants has reached a fever pitch. Rival tools from Google and Meta are vying for the same “text-to-video” audience, and platforms like Anthropic’s Claude have seen a surge in popularity due to different approaches to data privacy and corporate partnerships.
OpenAI likely hopes to retain users who are looking for a singular place to handle text, code, images, and now, motion. However, there are problems that come with making such a powerful tool easier to use. Critics say that the extra accessibility could lead to more deepfakes or people trying to get around safety measures.
The cost of AI high-quality video
Generating video is significantly more computationally expensive than generating text. The Information suggests that this integration could raise OpenAI’s operating costs, which could affect how they price things in the future. The company is already experimenting with ads on its cheaper plans to make up for these costs.
OpenAI hasn’t officially confirmed the launch date. However, the company’s history of rapid feature releases suggests that we might be typing video prompts into our favorite chatbot sooner rather than later.
