Samsung is working on an upgraded S Pen that will come with some more advanced features and technologies, but it’s not exactly clear when the company plans to introduce it. Now that the Galaxy S26 series has officially been announced, it’s been confirmed that the S Pen that comes with the Galaxy S26 Ultra is basically the same one that came with last year’s phone. A new one is on the way, however.
Fears of Samsung’s S Pen disappearing began sometime after Samsung removed the Bluetooth capabilities from the S Pen with last year’s Galaxy S25 Ultra. A report from last April suggested that it was possible Samsung could get rid of the S Pen in the Galaxy S Ultra phones, potentially starting in 2027. However, Samsung says this isn’t happening. It’s simply revamping the S Pen. The speculation is that it could end up using a new technology called the USI 2.0 standard. If that happens, it might have a notable impact on both the pen and the phones.
Samsung is developing an upgraded S Pen that “requires a new display structure”
The key thing to keep in mind with Samsung’s new “more advanced S Pen” is that it requires a new display structure, according to Samsung’s Chief Operating Officer, Won-Joon Choi. He did not share any specific details about this display structure, though.
SamMobile notes that it could be the USI 2.0 standard, and that would potentially have a positive effect on future Samsung phones. With the release of the Galaxy S26 Ultra, there are reports of third-party magnetic cases for use with magnetic Qi2 chargers potentially breaking S Pen functionality. As SamMobile states, USI 2.0 could be a solution to this problem.
This would probably be the most notable benefit of moving to this standard. Though Samsung likely has other reasons for using whatever new display structure it chooses. A new S Pen is likely to have other upgrades as well, and Samsung will no doubt throw in some new features.
