Back in 2022, Apple introduced Dynamic Island on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models. Now, a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has revealed that the iPhone 18 Pro series could feature an even smaller Dynamic Island than before.
Smaller Dynamic Island coming to iPhone 18 Pro
Based on the report, it seems that Apple isn’t getting rid of Dynamic Island just yet. Instead, the report claims that Dynamic Island on the iPhone 18 Pro will become smaller. When the feature was first introduced, many were concerned that the feature would eat into the display’s real estate or become a distraction.
However, many users have since adapted to it. Also, thanks to features like Live Activities, it has become a genuinely useful feature. So, how is Apple planning to achieve a smaller footprint?
According to the rumors, Apple will place the Face ID dot illuminator under the display. The company is also rumored to utilize camera miniaturization technology to shrink down the front-facing camera. Unfortunately, we don’t know how much smaller it will be compared to previous models. Previous rumors suggested a reduction of about 35%.
Confusing rumors
That being said, there are some confusing rumors going around. Apple was supposed to go all in with an in-display Face ID and selfie camera for its 20th anniversary iPhone in 2027. But the company was also expected to transition to that with the iPhone 18, which would feature an in-display Face ID system.
There were also reports that Apple could use a hole-punch camera cutout placed on the side of the display. Dynamic Island isn’t going away, but its position could shift. Now these rumors claim that Apple could house several components in Dynamic Island, but it won’t be under the display just yet.
It is possible that the earlier rumors weren’t wrong. Maybe that was Apple’s initial goal, but after prototyping it and testing it, it did not go the way the company had hoped. So they decided to abandon that idea. Either way, we’ll have to wait until later this year when Apple announces the phones. So, until then, it’s best to take this with a grain of salt for now.
