A new PlayStation TV device is starting to surface in rumors, with a claim that Sony could bring this device back alongside the launch of the PS6 and the PS6 handheld. If you’re not familiar with the PlayStation TV, it was a small device you could plug into your TV that allowed you to access PS Vita games on the big screen.
The device wasn’t successful and was cancelled after two years, but it was a neat device because the PS Vita had a completely different library of games than the PS4. If a new PSTV is on the way, Sony would need to find a way to make it a necessary device to have. At least in some capacity.
A new PlayStation TV hasn’t been confirmed, but it could complement the hardware lineup
Since this isentirely speculation, there’s no way to tell what Sony’s plans are for certain. Having said that, the current rumors are that the PS6 will have a handheld launch alongside it. This handheld is also rumored to be coming with a dock for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2-style TV play. Taking this into consideration, it’s possible that a new PSTV could be the branding for this dock in some form.
Of course, it’s important to remember that these are just rumors. There’s likely a long road ahead before the PS6 launches at this point. Recent reports state that it might have been delayed until as late as 2030. A lot can happen in four years. Which means, it’s possible for a new PSTV to be part of Sony’s plan and then not be part of it at the end. Time will tell.
