The RAM and storage shortages are just beginning and are suspected to last for years to come, according to new reports. AI’s insatiable hunger for RAM has had a profound impact on the technology industry, in large part on the consumer side. With RAM and storage in short supply, both types of products have increased in price considerably. In turn, other products that contain RAM and/or storage components have gone up in price as well. In some cases, like with Valve’s Steam Deck OLED, the product is no longer in stock and will remain that way “intermittently.”
The RAM and storage shortages began in late 2025 and were expected to carry through most of 2026. This has led to the increased prices and low stock, but has also led to rumors that some products expected to launch this year or next may be delayed up to a few years to deal with these issues. Delays, out-of-stock labels, and higher prices may stick around a lot longer than initially anticipated, however. If true, then consumers are in for a bad time.
RAM and storage shortages could last through 2030
According to Phison CEO K.S. Pua, the RAM and storage shortages are potentially going to last a few more years. Some reports thought that the shortage might carry through just 2026. This would have been bad enough for consumers. Now, industry experts are warning that the shortage might last a few years longer.
This will no doubt have a big impact on pricing, just like before. It’s also likely to cause more problems with stock for products that contain one or both types of components. However, it potentially gets worse. In the interview with Chinese media, K.S. Pua states that the enterprise demand hasn’t been fully factored in. It’s also stated that these issues have the potential to severely impact the consumer segment of the industry. Some consumer-focused businesses may end up going out of business.
What’s more, is that a large number of low-end brands are expected to exit the market because they won’t be able to secure the RAM needed to make their products.
