In the past few iPhone generations, Apple made a big deal about its materials of choice. The company used stainless steel for previous Pro and Pro Max models, before later switching to titanium. However, for the iPhone 17 Pro Max, the company opted for aluminum. It feels like a step backwards, and it’s definitely something you need to consider.
Is the iPhone 17 Pro Max “softer”?
According to a post on X by user @iAm_erica, they revealed that the aluminum iPhone 17 Pro Max is soft enough where even inside of a case, it still managed to dent when the phone fell onto the floor. They claimed to be using a dBrand Grip Case, where the phone fell from roughly the height of a stroller.
This is rather alarming, especially since a stroller height isn’t that tall. And to see the phone dented while inside of a protective case? Double yikes. As it turns out, Apple used a softer aluminum for the phone. This is according to @phonefuturist, who revealed that the iPhone 17 Pro Max uses 5080-Series aluminum.
What’s surprising is that for the base iPhone 17 model, Apple uses a harder 6000-series aluminum. Before all the Apple haters attempt to call out the company for cutting costs, there might be a good reason for it. @phonefuturist claims that the reason for the 5080-series aluminum is because of thermals.
Since the iPhone 17 Pro Max uses a new vapor chamber for cooling, Apple opted for an alloy for better heat dissipation. This means that while the phone’s chassis might be “softer,” it might actually be better when it comes to thermals. Unfortunately, this is a trade-off customers will have to come to terms with.
What can you do about it?
At this point in time, there’s really nothing we can do about it. We doubt Apple will switch to a harder aluminum because of this. If you are planning to get the iPhone 17 Pro Max or already own one, then your best option is to get a nice and sturdy case for it.
In the past, iPhone models made out of stainless steel or titanium could get away with minimalist cases. However, with the softer aluminum, you might need to get a case that’s more rugged. Maybe one with protection designed specifically for the edges. It’s not ideal, but that’s the reality.
In the meantime, don’t expect Apple to revert back to using titanium just yet. According to the rumors, the iPhone 18 will continue using aluminum. The only difference is better blending between metal and glass for a more seamless look.
