Apple’s products use all kinds of technologies. Some of these techs were invented by the firm themselves, and some by others. Typically, companies would license a patent if they wanted to use it in a product. In Apple’s case, they were sued by a company called Optis Wireless over 4G technology, but it looks like the firm managed to win the trial.
Apple wins 4G Optis Wireless trial
Optis claimed during the trial that Apple had allegedly violated its patents regarding 4G wireless technology. In fact, Optis won its earlier lawsuits against Apple. In the earlier lawsuit, Optis won verdicts of $506 million and $300 million against Apple. Unfortunately, both verdicts were overturned on appeal.
In a statement made by an Apple spokesperson, “We thank the jury for their time, and we’re pleased they rejected Optis’ false claims. Optis makes no products, and its sole business is to sue companies, which it has done repeatedly to Apple in an attempt to obtain an excessive payout.”
The jury ultimately decided that Apple did not infringe on any of the five LTE patents that they were originally sued over back in 2019. This is great news for Apple. If Optis had won and Apple failed in its appeal, the Cupertino company would be on the hook for more than half a billion dollars.
The fight’s not over yet
That being said, while this win is good news for Apple, it’s not over yet. There is a good chance Optis will appeal the ruling. If they do, it’s back to the appeals court again. Also, Apple is not only fighting Optis in the US, but in the UK too. Over in the UK, the courts ordered Apple to pay $502 million. Currently, Apple has appealed the decision, and the UK Supreme Court will hear the case in June 2026.
This isn’t Apple’s first time fighting patent battles. In the past, Apple has encountered numerous “patent trolls,” or companies whose purpose is to buy up patent portfolios or file vague patents and sue companies in hopes of getting a quick settlement.
Ultimately, regardless of the outcome, neither Apple nor Optis are the real winners. Their lawyers are.
