Ready to get your family skiing and riding? I’m here to help. One of the most stressful parts of the ski experience is navigating ski school. That’s why I’m working with Sugarbush Mountain on a series about ski and snowboarding school to demystify the process and help families make the most of every day on snow. We’ve covered how to prep your kiddo the night before and now we’re ready for the big day! The first lesson. Here’s what you need to know to master ski school drop off.

Timing
Before you head off, there are a few things to go over in the morning
- Verify the start of school.Â
- Find out where to park. Many ski schools have drop zones (short term parking) that are close to the school for a smooth transition.
- Double-check the pick up time.
Gear Check
Don’t leave this until the last minute. You’ll need a small bag with all the essentials.
- Have everything labeled. We like Mabel’s Labels and you can save 15% with code SKIMOMS at checkout.
- Things you can rent: helmets, boots, poles, skis, boards
- Things you can’t rent: waterproof outerwear, goggles, mittens.
- Encourage your kiddo to carry their own gear. Get a backpack or boot bag for each kid to start teaching them about responsibility and organization.
Momtrends MediaReview the Day
At drop off take a moment to review how the day will work. Ideally this will be the third or fourth time you’ve gone over what to expect. Kids like to hear things multiple times to let it sink in.
This is also a good time to make sure your kiddo knows your cell-phone number OR put the number on the child’s helmet (a note can say: if lost, please contact…with your name and cell #).
Master the Drop Off
Be cheerful and excited about YOUR ski day. Attitude is everything. How you react to the situation will transfer to your child.Â
If you are running late and feel frazzled, that energy will hit your kid. Try to stay upbeat and positive. Momtrends Tip: Listen to your favorite music on the way to the mountain.
Make an End of Day Plan
Maybe it’s skiing a run or two on the bunny slopes, maybe it’s a hot cocoa, whatever the case, have a treat planned for the pick-up. And don’t be late!
These little rituals go a long way towards creating memories and happy associations with skiing.
