Google Maps users who frequently use Android Auto for daily driving may get a new in-dash avatar icon customization support. The tech giant is reportedly working on customization options within the in-car experience by allowing drivers to change their avatar icon directly on the infotainment screen. The update was discovered in Android Auto version 16.2. It suggests the feature is being developed to bring greater feature parity between the phone app and Android Auto.
Android Auto update to bring Google Maps driving avatar icon customization feature
Android Auto is often described by users as a simple extension of the Android smartphone OS. However, it operates as a separate platform with its own update cycle. Because of this, certain features available in Google Maps on smartphones do not immediately appear on the car display. Now, a new string code discovered by Android Authority in Google’s Android Auto 16.2.660604-release edition reveals the firm is working on native driving avatar icon customization support.
As of right now, users who want to change their Avatar Icon in Google Maps must unlock their phone and adjust the setting there. The default triangular navigation marker can be replaced with different vehicle shapes, including cars and vans. It can also be customized by color. But Android Auto doesn’t allow these changes in-dash. That’s set to change soon, as a new report indicates that drivers will eventually be able to update their icons directly from the car’s screen.
A step toward making the usage less reliant on phones
The new under-development feature effectively eliminates the need to use a phone to change avatar. It can be useful, especially while driving. However, the feature is not yet live for all users. The tool is currently spotted inside code, which suggests it may be getting tested internally. If everything goes well, we can expect the stable release of the feature in the coming weeks. However, do note that Google has not shared any official words on it yet.
