T-Mobile has launched a new live AI language translation service that promises to change how people communicate across language barriers. The latest feature works directly on the carrier’s advanced 5G network. It does not require a dedicated smartphone app or device. Instead, the network handles the translation in real time.
T-Mobile announces live AI language translation on its network
The newly announced live AI translation feature runs on T-Mobile‘s latest 5G network infrastructure. It allows conversations to be interpreted instantly in more than 50 languages. Unlike app-based tools, this one relies on agentic AI hosted within the network itself. The only requirement to access the feature is that the user should be connected to T-Mobile’s network.
During the calls, users can activate the AI live translation feature by pressing 87, which signals the network to begin real-time translation. Since the service works on the network directly, even a basic feature phone can access it. There’s no need to download any third-party app or software. The network giant further says the AI processes speech instantly and converts it into the chosen language during the call.
T-Mobile says it wants to remove the global language barrier
With the new translation tool, T-Mobile aims to make communication smoother and more accessible. To ensure privacy, the company confirms that no data or record is stored. The company says the translations happens real-time and are discarded right-after the call ends. Performance metrics such as accuracy and latency are measured during the call, but the spoken content itself is not retained.
However, some critics have questioned the privacy measures of the feature. Wireless carriers in the United States have faced scrutiny over data practices in the past. Regardless, the feature is surely a very good addition, and it could remove the global language barrier by promoting real-time, seamless translated conversations.
