Samsung expects that its memory chips will be in very high demand throughout 2026 and 2027, and that seems like a pretty likely scenario. The RAM shortage is impacting several different categories of consumer electronics, but manufacturers are also being hit hard by increased costs of the components needed to make those consumer electronics.
Samsung was recently reported to soon begin mass-producing its HBM4 memory chips. This would allow it to lead the market against competitors in terms of being out the door first with a larger quantity of the new memory chip standard. It also now seems possible that Samsung’s push to start mass-producing now is partly because of its expectation of sustained high demand for its chips. By mass-producing this early in the year, it would be more prepared to handle that demand if it carries through the next two years.
Samsung expects its memory chips to be in high demand through 2027 because of AI hyperscalers
The RAM shortage can probably be almost entirely attributed to AI companies building out massive data centers, which in turn has also caused high prices for manufacturers as well as consumers. The CTO of Samsung Device Solutions, Song Jai-hyuk, believes that AI hyperscalers are a big part of why its chips will be in high demand for the foreseeable future.
AI companies are buying up memory chips at “unprecedented levels,” Song Jai-hyuk says, and that has directly resulted in higher memory costs. With so much of the memory chip stock being bought up by all these AI companies, more will be needed for other manufacturers. But low supply means a more premium price in most cases, and that hasn’t changed with memory chips.
Samsung has also reportedly received feedback from corporate customers who got HBM4 chips early on, noting that it was “very satisfactory.” At least one company, NVIDIA, is reported to have finalized testing of Samsung’s HBM4 chips and placed large orders for the memory.
How will this impact consumers?
With regards to the HBM4 memory chips, these aren’t directly sold to consumers, so there isn’t likely to be an impact on consumers in this fashion. However, the high cost of memory across the industry will impact consumers. It could also impact the price of Samsung’s own products, such as the upcoming Galaxy S27 series phones that are slated to be announced on February 25 at the first Galaxy Unpacked event of 2026.
However, there is a way consumers will be able to potentially save a little money on those devices, and it’s through the Galaxy Reserve program. Samsung usually ends up rewarding customers who reserve devices in one way or another. For this set of devices, those who reserve one of the upcoming phones will get a $30 credit. Those who reserve and pre-order using that reservation will also be entered to win a $5,000 gift card. Plus, there are other ways to save through trade-in discounts and more.
