Most people know Motorola for their telecom products. However, the company is also active in other segments, even offering Android Auto adapters. In fact, the Motorola MA1 has been a go-to solution for drivers looking to cut the cord in their cars for years, thanks to being the only adapter with Google’s official backing. But after four years on the market, the hardware started to show its age. Now, recent filings suggest that a successor, the “Motorola MA2,” is on the horizon with some much-needed upgrades for the Android Auto adapter.
Motorola MA2 Wireless Auto adapter leaks with redesign to fix old hurdles
The most significant change revealed in recent leaks addresses the biggest complaint about the original model: the built-in cable. The MA1 featured a non-detachable USB-A cord, which meant that if the cable frayed or if your car used USB-C, you were essentially out of luck.
As 9to5Google reports, the upcoming Motorola MA2 appears to ditch the permanent tether in favor of a detachable cable design. Photos from the FCC listing show both USB-A and USB-C connections. They suggest that the new adapter will be compatible with modern vehicles right out of the box. This modular design not only makes the device more versatile, but it also extends its lifespan, as you don’t have to replace the whole thing if a cable breaks.
Mystery switches
The MA2 has a new look besides the cable. A new physical switch on the side of the device stands out. Its exact function is still unclear, but some speculate it could solve the common “paired-phone switching” headache. Currently, moving between two users in the same car can be a clunky process; a dedicated toggle could make that transition seamless.
Despite the hardware overhaul, the device seems to stay true to its roots. The filings explicitly describe it as a wireless adapter for Android Auto, with no current signs of the cross-compatibility for Apple CarPlay that some competitors offer.
When can you get it?
While Motorola hasn’t made an official announcement, the timing of the regulatory filings offers a hint. If the company follows the same schedule as the original launch, we could see the Motorola MA2 hitting shelves as early as April 2026.
The original MA1 launched at a $90 price point, though it frequently sees discounts nowadays. Drivers should expect the new model to return to that premium starting price, offering a more polished and durable way to keep the dashboard clutter-free. For those tired of tangled wires, the wait for a modern “official” solution is almost over.
