Much like Google with Google accounts, as well as other popular platforms where teens access content online, Discord is adding an age verification system that will require users to verify that they’re an adult if they want to access certain features. Discord announced the new changes coming to its application on February 9, 2026.
The company says that these changes will start in March, and all users will need to verify their age. This means new and existing users will have to finalize this process, or they risk losing access to certain features. This technically makes the age verification a requirement, but only if you want full access to everything Discord offers. As Discord isn’t making it a requirement to use the service in general. That might be good news for those who don’t care for the verification methods. According to Discord, users will need to upload a face scan or a photo of their ID to verify their age. In an age where privacy concerns seem to be at a high point, some users probably won’t like the idea of having to upload an image of their face to an online social platform.
Discord age verification will be needed if you don’t want to lose features
As mentioned above, if you want to keep full access to the Discord platform’s features, you’ll have to upload a face scan or an image of your ID to verify that you’re an adult. Discord doesn’t give an exact date as to when this goes live, just that it’s happening in early March.
As for what features you lose access to, Discord lays it out pretty plainly. You’ll need to have an account that’s verified as an adult if you want to access content filters, age-restricted spaces, or use the app’s stage feature to speak. Warning prompts will also be issued when a friend request comes in for teen accounts. But only if it’s from a person they may not know. Additionally, Discord will route all messages from people you may not know to a separate inbox.
The biggest change here is the blocking of access to age-restricted servers. It’s entirely possible that many servers that users are part of now could be re-labeled as age-restricted once these changes go live. If that happens, any users who haven’t verified their age will not see anything the server offers. Instead, the server will be “obfuscated” with a black screen until users have verified they’re an adult. This goes for servers that users may have been a part of prior to these changes. Basically, the only way to ensure you don’t lose anything is by verifying your age.
