Samsung has reportedly heard that the iPhone 18 Pro, set to launch later this year, is going to be getting a variable aperture camera. Something that Samsung did many years ago on the Galaxy S9 series. And now, Samsung is looking to bring a variable aperture camera to the Galaxy S27, so it can compete with Apple and continue to lead the way for Android phones.
This comes from Ice Universe, who generally has some really solid internal sources at Samsung, though this report is actually coming from ETNews, a Korean media outlet. The report says that the “evaluation has already moved beyond internal discussion. Samsung has asked its suppliers to develop and test related components, with Samsung Electro-Mechanics and MCNEX identified as the companies responsible for producing and validating the key parts.”
This shows that Samsung is paying close attention to what Apple does and is following exactly what they do. After all, Samsung is reportedly launching a second, wider foldable later this year to compete with Apple. After years of telling the media that the skinny cover display was the best option.
Apple and Samsung set to follow Huawei’s lead?
While Samsung did offer a variable-aperture camera on the Galaxy S9 many years ago, it wasn’t really that good. Remember that cameras back then were much smaller. But, Huawei did launch a variable aperture camera on the Pura 80 Ultra, and even its foldable, the Mate X7, has a variable-aperture camera.
Huawei’s option allows the camera to open from f/4.0 all the way to f/1.6, and you can actually see the lens opening up on the Pura 80 Ultra. The advantage of having a variable aperture camera is that you’re able to let in more light when needed, get a shallower depth of field, and really get some great macro shots with incredible bokeh.
Of course, this is for the Galaxy S27 series, so we still have a year before we’ll see this device launch.
