The City of Boston’s share of the cost for renovating the city-owned White Stadium in Franklin Park has risen to $135 million, Mayor Michelle Wu said Friday, up from an initial estimate of $50 million. Boston Legacy Football Club, the city’s private partner on the renovation, will put up at least $190 million, financed in part by a Bank of America loan.
The renovated facility will accommodate professional women’s soccer and community use. Boston Legacy FC’s privately funded public and community benefits, guaranteed under a stadium lease agreement negotiated in December of 2024, will surpass $252 million over the next 15 years, reportedly the largest community benefits agreement in the city’s history.
“Our partnership with Boston Legacy will have an enduring impact with investments in local businesses, Franklin Park, surrounding communities and our students,” said Wu.
However, the Boston Business Journal reported that two advocacy groups have sued the city, claiming the renovation of the 1940s-vintage White Field isn’t a legal use of public parkland. The case remains active in Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.
