Much like Google and Microsoft, Mozilla has also added AI features to its browser, Firefox. These include an AI tool for tab grouping, an AI-powered translation, Link Previews, Alt-text in PDFs, and an AI chatbot in the sidebar. However, too much of AI can be an annoyance. In the case of Mozilla, some users reportedly expressed their dissatisfaction with the AI push. This is why Firefox is going to add new controls for AI features soon.
Soon, you’ll be able to block AI features on Firefox
Starting with Firefox 148, which will roll out on February 24th, users will find a new AI controls section within the desktop browser settings. There will be a new “Block AI enhancements” toggle. This offers a single place to block current and future generative AI features in the Firefox browser. Additionally, there’ll be a provision for users to review and manage individual AI features. That is in case you choose to use them.
This change should allow users to continue using Firefox without AI, while Mozilla continues to build AI features for those who want them. Mozilla’s CEO, Enzor-DeMeo, notes that choice matters. He believes that AI features added to Firefox, as well as those coming in the future, are useful. These enhance everyday browsing.
There will be a new toggle
He adds that while users trust it with the collected data, there could be some users who prefer not to. For them, a toggle to turn off AI features is on the way. It’s definitely nice of Mozilla to give this choice and freedom to opt out of AI, which is not possible on the competition.
Mozilla says that when the Block AI enhancements toggle is on, users won’t see pop-ups or reminders to use existing or upcoming AI features. If you wish to try AI controls early, they’ll be available first in Firefox Nightly.
