Apple is about to make upgrading to the MacBook Pro more confusing in 2026. According to a report from South Korean publication The Elec, Apple is expected to debut a brand-new MacBook Pro design later this year. But that’s not all. Not only will this new MacBook Pro sport a new look, but it will feature OLED displays as well.
New Apple MacBook Pro design arriving this year
According to the report, Samsung Display is getting ready to begin mass production on OLED panels that will be used in the brand-new MacBook Pro designed by Apple. This laptop is expected to arrive in the final quarter of the year. Samsung Display is also apparently targeting a shipment of 2 million panels by the end of the year.
This is a huge deal. OLED displays generally offer better color saturation compared to LCD, which is key for those working in photography or design who might need the colors to pop. It would also be useful for those who consume a lot of video content and even gamers. We’ve been hearing for a while that Apple was getting ready to launch an OLED MacBook Pro. Now, 2026 could be when it’s happening.
So, what else is new apart from the use of OLED? For the most part, don’t expect drastic changes to the laptop’s chassis. However, Apple is rumored to get rid of the notch in the display. Instead, the company will opt for a hole-punch design. If that’s true, it could mimic the selfie camera design for 2026’s iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models.
An awkward upgrade situation
That being said, this places customers in an awkward position. You see, in addition to the OLED MacBook Pro, Apple is also expected to refresh its current lineup with the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. This means that customers who upgrade now will miss out on the OLED version.
This could result in customers choosing not to upgrade to the newer and more powerful chips in favor of a better display. That being said, we don’t know what chip Apple will use for its OLED MacBook Pro. It could be that the company will use lower-end chips. This means that users who need more CPU and GPU power will have to compromise by getting a non-OLED MacBook Pro.
Don’t get us wrong. The displays used in Apple’s current laptops are already pretty fantastic. However, there is a degree of FOMO here. Customers might have to choose between something that looks good or something that’s practical for their needs.
