When Apple launched the iPhone 17 last year, one of the lesser talked about features is the phone’s front-facing camera. Apple marketed it as “Center Stage,” which basically allowed users to snap photos with the phone in landscape or portrait orientation, but the subject still ends up positioned in the center anyway. Now, it looks like both Huawei and OPPO are reportedly considering introducing a square sensor for their selfie cams as well.
Huawei & OPPO considering square selfie cameras
For those unfamiliar, most phones with selfie cams typically rely on rectangular-shaped sensors. These sensors offer standard aspect ratios like 4:3 or 3:2. This means that if you wanted a wider shot using the front-facing camera, you’d turn your phone to landscape orientation. But if you wanted a “taller” or “longer” photo, you’d use it in portrait orientation.
While there’s nothing wrong with that, a square selfie sensor makes it easier and saves users time from cropping or adjusting their photos, which could be why Huawei and OPPO are considering it. This is according to posts by Digital Chat Station who claim that both companies are looking into it.
The post claims that OPPO could use it for its flagship devices. This includes the upcoming Find X10 series. Digital Chat Station also says that it will be a “super-enhanced version” that is apparently better than Apple’s. We’re not sure how much better they’re talking about, so we’ll have to wait and see.
As for Huawei’s implementation of the sensor, the tipster says that Huawei could approach it differently. The company might use it for its mid-range devices that focus more on photography.
Does it really matter?
Selfie cams are often neglected in smartphones. Most companies typically choose to focus on the rear cameras, rather than the front ones. This is why it’s not mentioned that often in marketing materials.
However, despite the lack of marketing, the majority of front-facing cameras actually do a great job. This is thanks to the combination of hardware and advanced image processing algorithms. At the same time, a square sensor does have certain advantages or benefits. For instance, you would only need to shoot once and repurpose it for different platforms. You could shoot a video in vertical for TikTok, and horizontal for YouTube.
