Even if you’re not an Apple fan, you got to be at least curious as to how the Cupertino company will tackle the foldable form factor, right? Now, thanks to additional details shared by a tipster on Weibo, we might have a better idea of the design of the iPhone Fold.
More details on iPhone Fold design leaked
According to the details of the iPhone Fold design shared by Instant Digital, it seems that the handset will more closely resemble an iPad rather than an iPhone. By that we mean Apple’s choice of the placement of the physical buttons.
The post claims that the volume buttons are positioned on the top right edge of the phone. This is versus the iPhone, where the volume rocker is placed on the left side. This means that the iPhone Fold will share a closer design to Apple’s tablets, like the iPad mini. Apparently, this is due to the motherboard of the phone positioned on the right side of the phone. So, to avoid routing cables across the left, Apple chose to place the volume buttons on the right as well.
As for the other buttons, the power button, which will feature Touch ID integration, will also be positioned to the right. This is the same for Camera Control. Ultimately, this leaves the left side of the phone completely button-free. It’s actually not a bad idea, since Apple might not want users to accidentally trigger buttons while holding or unfolding the phone.
Apple is also expected to adopt a hole-punch camera cutout for the selfie camera. On the back, the phone will sport a dual camera setup with a module that looks similar to the iPhone Air. Last but not least, the iPhone Fold will only be available in a black or white finish.
What else can we expect?
These latest details add to the growing list of specs and features we’ve been hearing since 2025. Some other features you might be able to expect include a more iPad-like aspect ratio. Most foldables tend to look more square-ish when unfolded. Apple is going for something more tablet-like, which will make it easier for app developers. However, this means that the cover display will be considerably smaller than most modern-day smartphones.
We also heard that the iPhone Fold could pack the largest battery we’ve seen in an iPhone at 5,500mAh. However, since it needs to power a larger display, don’t expect considerably longer-lasting battery life.
The iPhone Fold will be one of three iPhones Apple plans to launch this year. This includes the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. If the rumors are accurate, Apple will skip the cheaper/base models and save it for 2027.
