Social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram are full of AI slop these days. It’s borderline disgusting to see videos obviously made using AI, but yet people were engaging with it as if it were real. Well, it looks like YouTube is trying to get that off its platform. In fact, it seems that YouTube has wiped out about 4.7 billion views from AI slop videos.
YouTube has wiped some AI slop off its platform
In a letter kicking off 2026, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan spoke up about AI and its role on the platform. When speaking about AI slop, Mohan was quoted as saying, “To reduce the spread of low quality AI content, we’re actively building on our established systems that have been very successful in combatting spam and clickbait, and reducing the spread of low quality, repetitive content.”
Now, it seems that Mohan has delivered as promised. In a report from Kapwing, it appears that YouTube has de-platformed several channels that built their success off AI slop. There were about 16 channels that have been de-platformed since, which means that YouTube has basically wiped out over 4.7 billion combined lifetime views of AI slop.
Some of these channels have been deleted, while others remain but their libraries are now empty. This is a promising start, and one that we hope other platforms will look into.
It’s a little ironic
That being said, it’s a little ironic YouTube is clamping down so hard on AI. In Mohan’s letter, he actually revealed that the company plans on bringing more AI features to the platform. However, Mohan did defend the use of AI. He said that using AI to create content can be viewed as a legitimate creative outlet. He also said that at the same time, he wants YouTube to be a place where people “feel good spending their time.”
It actually makes sense. We’ve seen trailers and videos that were clearly created using AI. However, these videos are actually entertaining. For example, using AI to envision characters from a video game, book, or cartoon portrayed by real human actors. Or reworking the endings of shows that previously left viewers unsatisfied.
In any case, what do you think? Do you think AI should be used in content creation? Or are you 100% against the idea?
