WhatsApp is rolling out a new security feature called “Strict account settings,” focusing mainly on high-risk users. The feature that sounds almost similar to Apple’s Lockdown Mode for iPhones is especially aimed at journalists or public figures who may need safeguarding against highly sophisticated cyber attacks, which have become very common in this social media era. If you turn this on, the feature locks certain account settings to their most restrictive settings.
WhatsApp unveils new Strict account settings for high-risk users
WhatsApp notes that this will automatically block attachments and media from those who are not in your contacts. This should potentially protect users from spyware or malicious files. WhatsApp further details how Strict account settings protect users’ accounts and change their app-using experience.
In terms of account security, two-step verification is on. Security notifications are also on and locked. Meaning, it won’t be possible to change them. Furthermore, end-to-end encrypted backups are encouraged for users with backups enabled.
You can’t control the feature from WhatsApp web
When Strict account settings are on, link previews are off, and blocking of high-volume unknown account messages is on. The feature will also make changes to your profile and presence. Your Last seen and online status, Profile photo, About details, and links on your profiles stay locked to contacts only or your pre-established, selected list of people. Lastly, only known contacts or a pre-established list of people can add you to groups.
WhatsApp’s Strict account settings will roll out globally over the coming weeks. Once it’s there, users can enable them from Settings > Privacy > Advanced. WhatsApp makes it clear that you can’t turn on or off Strict account settings from WhatsApp Web. The feature is only accessible from your primary device.
Lastly, WhatsApp says that it has rolled out a programming language called Rust behind the scenes. This will help users keep their photos, videos, and messages safe from threats like spyware.
