NVIDIA is rumored to set a new baseline price for its GPU products in the near future, and it’s potentially going to be worse than what was previously thought. It’s worth noting that GPU prices have been all over the place for generations now. Since the arrival of the RTX 30 series, the boom of bitcoin mining caused a huge surge in purchases of graphics cards, which lowered the supply and ultimately led to scalpers (third-party sellers) inflating the cost to take advantage of the demand.
This has happened with the RTX 40-Series and RTX 50-Series as well. Although more recently, this has been due to a meteoric rise in demand for GPUs at AI data centers. Over the past few weeks and months, new reasons for increased prices have popped up, including the increase in prices of components that make up the GPUs. Such as RAM. This wasn’t helped by companies like Micron exiting the consumer market by stopping production of its Crucial-branded products. What’s concerning isn’t the price increase in general. It’s not ideal, but it was expected. The concerning part is how much the price is going to be.
NVIDIA is rumored to be setting a baseline GPU price increase of 30% soon
GPU prices haven’t exactly been low these past few months, at least in some cases, but there have been pockets of normalcy in the GPU market with the occasional price drop to around MSRP. They’ve also increased quite a bit as well. Even early on in the launch cycle, companies like ASUS and MSI raised prices of their most high-end GPUs. Then the RAM shortage hit and NVIDIA was expected to bump pricing by as much as 15%. AMD would be following suit, with a recent report stating that both companies were going to be informing their board partners about upcoming price hikes.
Now, the latest rumor comes from Moore’s Law is Dead on YouTube (via Gamer Meld), which states that the price increase is going to be as much as 30% for the baseline cost of the current NVIDIA GPUs. It’s also mentioned that the price increase will be imminent, which likely means within the next few weeks.
Another thing to take into account is that the baseline price is what’s mentioned here. That could suggest prices will go up beyond 30% for certain GPU models, and depending on the retailer, as well as available stock. In short, it’s not a good time to be building a gaming PC or upgrading components right now. As it won’t be cheap. In fact, prices on some GPUs have gotten so high that it’s simply cheaper to buy a pre-built gaming PC with an RTX 5090.
