Based on Google’s new launch schedule of Android, we expect that the company will release the Android 17 canary build soon. According to an earlier report, Android 17 will build on the Material 3 Expressive UI found in Android 16. This means we shouldn’t expect major design changes. However, thanks to a new leak, we have our first look at the new blur effects in Android 17 along with other changes, like a new screen recorder tool.
Android 17 blur effects, new screen recorder leaked
In a 9to5Google report, they shared screenshots of the upcoming UI changes in Android 17. These screenshots came courtesy of RKBDI on X, which apparently belong to an internal Android build. Like we said, Android 17 won’t offer a drastic redesign over its predecessor, and that’s to be expected.

We can’t expect Google to invest so much time and resources designing a new UI every time, but we can expect refinements. One of those changes in Android 17 included more blur effects and apparently a new screen recorder tool, for starters. Material 3 Expressive already included quite a bit of blur effects. This was to help certain UI elements stand out from the background, giving it a more modern look.
This will continue in Android 17, which is more evident in elements like the volume slider. The same can be said for other features like the power menu, which applies a blur to the background of your current screen.
Android 17 release date?
At the moment, we don’t have an official date for the release of Android 17. However, Google did previously change up its launch schedule. Back then, Google would push out its latest major Android updates around Q3 of the year, with the Pixel phones getting it first. So by the time non-Pixel devices were updated, it’s either in Q4 or the following year.
With this new change, Google is aiming to release major updates around Q2. This means that assuming all goes to schedule, we should see Android 17 released by the end of June. The company will most likely share more details at I/O 2026, with the canary build expected to arrive in the coming month or so.
