Later this year, Samsung is rumored to be launching a new size foldable, which is currently being called the “Galaxy Wide Fold”. This is a wider foldable, think of the original Google Pixel Fold or the OPPO Find N2, something that’s more of a passport size. And now, according to Ice Universe, who has been very accurate with a lot of Samsung leaks, the company is only planning to make 1 million of these.
That means that this is going to be a very limited run. While Samsung doesn’t list out concrete numbers for sales, it is reported that Samsung has sold around 6 million of the Galaxy Z Fold 7. It also produced around 500,000 Galaxy Z Fold SE models in 2024, and around 30,000 Galaxy Z TriFold models. Which shows how much they want to push this new concept.
Ice is also referring to this as a “concept device,” so this is likely just a test by Samsung to see if people really want something wider. And while it is going to be limited, this is being described as “Samsung’s largest initial batch among its special models over the past three years.”
The Galaxy Wide Fold is expected to have a 7.6″ inner display at a 4:3 aspect ratio
One of my biggest complaints with foldables currently is the inner display. It’s typically a square or almost a square. For instance, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is expected to keep its 18:20 aspect ratio. Which is great for multitasking, but it sucks for watching content. You really don’t get any more content on the screen than you would with a regular slab phone, due to those black bars.
But the Galaxy Wide Fold is set to fix that, apparently. The cover display would be 5.4 inches according to Ice, while the inner display would be a 7.6-inch foldable OLED that has a 4:3 aspect ratio. That means the front display is going to be incredibly wide. Considering the Google Pixel Fold already had a 17.4:9 outer display and the inner display was still a 5:6 aspect ratio. So Samsung is going for something even wider.
Why is Samsung going for such a wider Galaxy Z Fold this year? One word. Apple. Apple is reportedly launching its first foldable this year, and it’s going to be wider than most other foldables on the market. So Samsung wants to steal some of Apple’s thunder.
