Lauren’s path to the ski industry wasn’t typical. She grew up in San Diego, spent childhood ski trips at Mammoth, and fell in love with the mountain lifestyle during her time at the University of Colorado Boulder. After a decade at Mammoth Mountain, Lauren made the move to Bend, Oregon—where she discovered a destination that feels worlds apart from anything else.
“There is no winter destination quite like Bend, Sun River, Mount Bachelor. I just cannot find a comparable ski destination that is anything like this.”
Mount Bachelor’s Unique Location
Located on a dormant volcano, Mount Bachelor boasts over 4,000 skiable acres, 410 inches of annual snowfall, and—uniquely—360-degree skiing from the summit. That’s right: you can literally ski in every direction from the top.
But what really makes Mount Bachelor shine? Spring.
“My number one tip for families visiting Bachelor is come in the spring. It is so good in the spring. The whole mountain’s open. The weather is good, you get snow, but when it’s not snowing, you get sun.”
With the entire mountain open through Memorial Day, spring skiing at Mount Bachelor means soft snow, sunny days, and the chance to pack in more than just turns. Families can ski in the morning and hit bike trails, hiking paths, or even catch a live outdoor concert in the afternoon.
Why Families Love Mount Bachelor
Lauren outlines several reasons why Mount Bachelor is ideal for families looking to blend adventure and accessibility:
- Affordable lodging in nearby Bend and Sun River
- Free parking (a rarity in today’s ski world)
- Kids Ski Free passes and budget-friendly lesson packages
- Two base areas with extensive beginner terrain
- Year-round childcare options
- Four-season activities: downhill biking, zip tours, whitewater rafting, and more
“The summit of Mount Bachelor is a true bucket list ski experience… you can ski a true 360 degrees around the mountain, which you really can’t do anywhere else.”
Lauren also points out the mid-mountain fine dining experience—an unexpected perk at a destination known for its laid-back vibe and wide-open terrain. You can read our full 2022 review here.
