Sony is expected to delay the PS6 following several key changes in the industry that have been plaguing everything from GPUs to RAM to even phones and other consumer electronics. The hefty increase in RAM prices across the industry, alongside some of the biggest manufacturers in the industry exiting the consumer side of things to focus on AI clients, has made the cost of just about anything that uses RAM skyrocket. In some cases, consumers may be getting priced out of the products they love.
In others, these increases in price look to be impacting product release dates. Not necessarily for every consumer electronic product, mind you. In the case of the PS6, however, it looks like Sony’s new plan is to delay the console’s launch. If this is actually going to happen, then Sony could be making this decision so it has a chance to keep the price of the next PlayStation console down. If it stuck to its original timeline, then it would have had to contend with high memory and SSD prices. By delaying, it has a chance to avoid those costs. Therefore, the consumer may not have to deal with a price increase either. At least not for these reasons.
Sony may delay the launch of the PS6 all the way to 2030
A PS6 delay hasn’t been confirmed by Sony, but then again, it wouldn’t be, as Sony hasn’t even announced the PS6 yet, so it wouldn’t have a date for the console either. That being said, the prediction comes from Senior Research Analyst at MST, David Gibson, who states that Sony is “expected to beat market expectations, driven by sales of both in-house and third-party games.” According to Gibson, Sony now expects that it can extend the lifecycle of the PS5, allowing it to delay the PS6 longer than suspected.
It’s now suspected that the PS6 could be here in 2029 or 2030, as opposed to 2027 or 2028, like people were originally expecting. Of course, the initial rumor of a delay was also because of sky-high RAM prices, so that hasn’t really changed. It’s also suspected that Microsoft could be looking to delay its next Xbox for the same reasons.
