If you’re tired of boring SEO tutorials that go nowhere and push endless paid tools just to get started, you’re not alone. It’s always the same: “Find your perfect keyword, copy questions into a spreadsheet, use AI to generate content, paste it into WordPress, install plugins… yada yada.”
So, when I started the Beginner SEO with Semrush free course, I wasn’t feeling super optimistic at first. The beginning was a bit slow, but just 10 minutes in, there was a practical walkthrough of Semrush’s Keyword Magic Tool—and it was genuinely helpful! Unlike other courses, this one clearly explained the difference between Head Terms and Long-Tail Keywords in practice. They also don’t advise you to go after impossible-to-rank keywords, keeping it real from the start for us mere mortals.
With Semrush’s free account, you can get through this course without a hitch. Just watch out for daily limits. If you’re serious about SEO, you’ll eventually need a premium account—but that’s an issue for your future self (or your employer).

From that first walkthrough, you’ll get a sense of how this short course (under two hours) is structured. Each section starts with a strategy module (theory) followed by a practical example you can try right away. This keeps you engaged with real-world applications. By the end of the course, you’ll have:
- A set of target keywords
- At least one optimized piece of content
- A site audit
- A backlink strategy
Now, don’t get me wrong—I still dislike SEO. And if you enjoy SEO, I bet you must be really fun at parties. But this course makes it less painful by using a great tool and practical examples to set you up for success.
What You’ll Learn in This Course

Keyword Research
Before anything else, you’ve got to hunt down your keywords—these are the terms people type into Google when they’re looking for content like yours. Keyword research is essential for visibility and attracting the right audience.
This course kicks off by doing just that. You’ll quickly figure out which keywords match your content goals and then find hidden opportunities using Semrush’s Keyword Magic Tool. This section is practical and straightforward, steering clear of theoretical fluff and ensuring you’re ready to rank instead of chasing impossible keywords.
On-Page SEO
Next up, you’ll tackle on-page SEO—essentially how to make Google love your content without boring your readers. The instructors clearly demonstrate where and how to strategically place keywords to boost visibility without compromising readability. While the explanations are concise, they’re actionable, so you won’t spend hours wondering what to do next.
SEO Content Template
This module provides a practical demonstration of Semrush’s SEO tools, guiding you through creating optimized content step-by-step. You’ll immediately see competitor insights, refine your titles and descriptions, and even check your originality. It’s designed for people who appreciate clear, immediate results—no tedious spreadsheets or confusing theory here.
Technical SEO
Technical SEO is simpler than it sounds, especially when explained clearly. This section briefly introduces how to generate actionable site audit reports. Sure, it doesn’t cover how to fix every technical issue yourself (spoiler: you’ll probably pass it off to a developer), but it’s honest about the process. The goal here is to teach you enough to identify problems and delegate effectively.
Off-Page SEO
Finally, you’ll explore the essentials of link building—arguably the most tedious but incredibly important part of SEO, as quality backlinks significantly boost your site’s credibility and search rankings. The course gives practical tips on reaching out to websites for backlinks, replacing broken competitor links, and automating the repetitive tasks using Semrush.
Worksheet & Extra Resources

At the start, you’re encouraged to download a worksheet with guidelines. You don’t have to download it—you can just jot things down as you go. But it’s great for lazy learners (like me).
More importantly, since lessons are bite-sized, each one links to additional resources. If you ever need to dive deeper, the materials are right there.
The Instructors

The instructors are knowledgeable, explain things at a perfect pace, and clearly present both theory and practical steps using charts and illustrations. Each lesson includes a transcript, and you can enable closed captions if needed.
Free Certificate

Complete the course and pass a 12-question exam, and you’ll get a free certificate to showcase on LinkedIn—perfect for boosting your SEO credentials.
Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for a straightforward, practical SEO course, this is it. No fluff, no endless theory—just actionable steps that make SEO more hassle-free.
