When the GTI arrived in the US in 1983, we had no idea it would change the very fabric of our automotive industry forever. It wasn’t the first hot hatch on the road but it was the one that helped them to proclaim their gospel far and wide, and set the bar for how they should forever be measured. Today, eight generations on, the icon has never lost its luster, managing to consistently perform better than the last generation while becoming more practical and luxurious at the same time.
