It all started in 1997, on a high-speed train. Volkswagen Group Chair Ferdinand Piëch was traveling on the Shinkansen express train, cruising along at 300 mph, between Tokyo and Nagoya. He had just had a conversation with Karl-Hanz Neumann, the head of VW’s powertrain development, about some future engine ideas.
