It’s not hidden that the Google Pixel launcher has troubled users in the past. In most instances, Google has been quick to squash related bugs. But this time a strange bug has plagued the Google Pixel launcher. Over the past few days, Google Pixel phone users on Reddit have been reporting about a bug that kicks in when trying to switch between apps.Â
A persistent Google Pixel launcher bug causes closed apps to reopen
Folks over at PiunikaWeb first spotted a Reddit post that includes a video and shows how the Pixel phone opens a previously closed app when opening a new one. As seen in the screen recording, when the user closes Instagram and immediately opens X (formerly Twitter), Instagram opens once again.
Apparently, this bug has plagued the user’s Google Pixel phone for the last six months. Surprisingly, it isn’t a one-off case. Multiple users who commented on the Reddit post have acknowledged similar problems. There’s even a bug entry filed on Google’s Issue Tracker portal, suggesting there are many affected by the issue.
Even worse, one user claims to have been facing the exact bug with the Pixel launcher on their latest Pixel 10 series phone and the old Pixel 8 Pro. That’s not all; users on both stable and Beta build of Android 16 have been facing this issue. Fortunately, Google has reportedly acknowledged the bug and escalated it to the development team on November 5. The company will likely roll out an update to fix the issue. Â
You should wait a few seconds before opening another app
If you are also affected, the only workaround available is to wait for a second before opening another app. It isn’t a permanent solution, but it has been effective in mitigating the bug Pixel users have been facing lately. It’s not one of those cases, though. In late October, Pixel 10 users started reporting a strange bug that prevents the toggle for speakerphone from working during calls. Google has yet to fix that issue.
