If you take a look around, the manual transmission is dying a slow death. This is especially the case when it comes to the American automotive market. For example, just 1.7 percent of all new cars sold in the US were manual, according to a 2023 study. This can be compared to a 1995 study wherein it was found that roughly 26.8 percent of all cars sold carried manual gearboxes. It seems that, as the automatic transmission has improved in reliability and gotten cheaper to produce, folks simply don’t want to put up with shifting their own gears anymore.
