After two weeks, Disney and YouTube made up on Friday, which resulted in all of the Disney channels returning to YouTube TV. Which is a pretty significant part of the lineup that Google currently offers – and the majority of the sports channels that YouTube TV has. So it’s good to see it back.
“We’re happy to share that we’ve reached an agreement with Disney that preserves the value of our service for our subscribers and future flexibility in our offers,” YouTube said in a statement.
Disney Entertainment’s co-chairs Alan Bergman and Dana Walden stated that the agreement reflects “how audiences choose to watch” entertainment. Continuing by saying that “we are pleased that our networks have been restored in time for fans to enjoy the many great programming options this weekend, including college football.”
YouTube TV finds itself in similar spats with legacy media properties quite often
It seems every time that a carriage deal is up, YouTube TV gets into a spat with said company. Earlier this year, really it was just last month, YouTube TV agreed to a new deal with NBCUniversal just before the deadline, so channels were not removed. It also found itself in a standoff with FOX back in August.
The good news, however, is that most of YouTube TV’s carriage deals are done for the next few years. So it should be at least two more years before we have to deal with this again.
But the real question is, what’s going on? Is YouTube TV being cheap? Are these legacy media companies trying to squeeze every cent they can? It’s likely a bit of both. Of course, legacy media companies are trying to get as much money as they can out of these carriage deals, especially nowadays where traditional live TV is on the verge of extinction.
However, other services have to deal with this too, while YouTube TV is the most public one. It seems as if YouTube TV is more stubborn than the others. But they are also cheaper than Fubo, Hulu + Live TV and DIRECTV Stream, so there does seem to be a method to the madness.
Ultimately, both are at fault.
