Apple has announced a new developer program, called the Mini Apps Partner Program. This will offer a reduced commission rate of 15% on in-app purchases for mini apps. Apple has supported mini apps and games on the App Store since 2017. Developers must first apply to take part in the program by submitting the request form, which Apple will review before making it available.
Apple halves App Store commission for mini apps
This new program will allow developers to save on the commission. Apple defines a mini app as “self-contained” experiences that are built using web technologies like HTML5 and JavaScript, which are distributed within a larger, native app. Though the technology has been around on the App Store for nearly a decade, it’s only now that it’s offering a reduced commission on mini app transactions.
This development reportedly follows Apple and Tencent’s agreement on a 15% commission for mini apps on WeChat. WeChat apparently offers millions of mini-apps built by other developers. These will allow users to track packages, look up transit directions, and shop online.
To qualify for the new mini app program, Apple says that the main app must be available on iOS or iPadOS and hosted on the App Store. The program also adds the new requirements for the app to support specific Apple technologies, including the Advanced Commerce API and Declared Age Rating API. This move will ensure apps offer age-appropriate content.
Developers must complete a request form to be a part of the program
Apple clarifies what a qualifying mini-apps In-App purchase might be. Firstly, they have to be digital goods and services, including consumables, such as currency. Next, an auto-renewing subscription that’s purchased and accessed within a single qualifying mini app.
There are a variety of native iOS apps that offer mini apps at the moment. These include messengers like LINE or WeChat. AI providers have also turned to the mini app space. Recently, ChatGPT launched apps that run inside its chatbot.
