Android games are coming to Steam, just not in the way you might think. Steam has an app on Android, which allows you to access your account info and profile, the community (somewhat), news, and, of course, the store to purchase games. You can also chat with friends and see who’s online and what they’re playing. What the app doesn’t do is harbor Android games. You would think this is what Valve was planning, but that isn’t the case at all. It actually has to do with the newly announced Steam Frame VR headset.
If you weren’t aware of the Steam Frame, it’s a new VR headset (similar to the Meta Quest 3) coming in 2026 that Valve announced yesterday. It was revealed alongside the new Steam Machine and a new Steam Controller. Both of which are also launching in 2026.
Android games will be coming to Steam through the Steam Frame headset
According to a report from The Verge, which spoke to Valve engineer Jeremy Selan, the Steam Frame will support Android games using the same APKs that are used for Android mobile devices. With this being the case, developers shouldn’t have too hard a time bringing their games over.
Valve says it’s also launching a developer program that will allow developers to get ahold of dev kits. It’s not clear when those dev kits will arrive for developers. Having said that, the Steam Frame is launching sometime in 2026, so it probably won’t be long.
Valve has confirmed that it will be encouraging Android game developers to bring their games to Steam. With dev kits out there, that process could be sped up. This also might lead to a wider variety of games available to play on the Steam Frame once it launches. It’s also worth keeping in mind that sometime in 2026 could be toward the Summer or later. While that might be a letdown for anyone who wants one of these headsets as soon as possible, it would be a benefit for Android game developers. They would have more time to get things ready and port their games over. And in the end, that’s good for the user.
