Snapchat is one of the most popular social media platforms among teenagers and younger adults. One of its interesting features is Bitmoji (aka avatar). For those who haven’t used Snapchat yet, think of it as a digital mockup of you that can be customized based on your mood. Ever since Snapchat launched 3D Bitmoji, complaints have poured in from across the globe demanding a change. Now, Snapchat has responded to those demands with “Comic Bitmoji,” which is basically the 2D version of the prior.
The new Bitmoji is available to only Snapchat Plus subscribers
Snapchat calls the 2D-style Bitmoji “New, Yet Nostalgic.” Well, “Nostalgic” because Bitmoji used to be 2D. It was back in 2023 the platform switched to the 3D version of it. So, is the new 2D-style Bitmoji available to every Snapchat user? No; Snapchat says that the new, nostalgic 2D Bitmoji will only be available to paying subscribers.
For the uninitiated, Snapchat’s “Plus” subscription costs $2.25 per month for the annual plan. In this case, Snapchat is basically implying that nostalgia comes at a cost. To make things clear, you’ll see renderings of the 3D version of Snapchat Bitmoji in a cartoon-style 2D Bitmoji.
In the announcement post, Snapchat noted, “Think of it like a filter for your avatar: the same customization and expressions you love, reimagined to be reminiscent of that iconic comic-inspired look.” It’s worth noting that the new setting will allow paying users to see the 2D version of all Bitmoji avatars in the app.

The new version is just as good
Snapchat has further clarified that the new comic-style 2D Bitmoji offers a similar feel, but with additional customization. In other words, you will come across different poses and a more detailed look than what used to be visible in the original version of 2D Bitmoji before 2023.
