Google Photos is receiving one of its biggest updates in years. For a long time, the platform has been a safe place to store memories. Now, the service is officially transforming into a sophisticated AI creation studio. Tech enthusiasts have been watching Google fine-tuning its advanced image-editing model, Nano Banana, restricting its most powerful tools to early beta testers or its own Pixel devices. Now, Google is finally releasing three major Nano Banana-powered upgrades, making powerful AI editing and search universally available to a wider Google Photos audience.
Google Photos’ biggest update: Nano Banana AI editing arrives for iOS and Android app
The integration of Nano Banana directly into the photo editor is the central development. This model, known for its ability to maintain the recognizable likeness of people and pets across dramatic alterations, now powers the “Help me edit” feature. “Help me edit” was born as one of the main selling points of the latest Google Pixel 10 series. Later, the company expanded the option to more Android users in the US. Now, even users of the app on iOS are getting it.
This tool allows users to make complex changes using simple, conversational commands. Instead of manual edits, you can type “make X smile” or transform a photo into a “Renaissance portrait.”
Making AI editing accessible
Google is also simplifying creativity with the new “Create with AI” section. This area is coming first to Android users in the US and India. “Create with AI” offers pre-made templates powered by Nano Banana. This means users can instantly apply imaginative concepts—like turning a family photo into a professional headshot or a holiday card—without writing a detailed prompt. This template system removes the high barrier to entry that complicated AI commands previously posed. Google is also working on “Personalized templates,” an option that will suggest edits based on your own photo library.
Finally, the Ask Photos feature is receiving a geographical expansion and an accessibility upgrade. This powerful tool is now rolling out to over 100 new countries and 17 languages worldwide. If you’re not aware, “Ask Photos” lets you ask questions about your entire gallery using Gemini. For even faster access, a new ‘Ask’ button now appears directly within the image viewer on both Android and iOS in the US. This enhancement allows users to instantly ask questions or request edits about a photo without navigating away from it.
