At the Snapdragon Summit in September, Qualcomm took the wraps off its next-gen flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Elite 5. Not too long after, Qualcomm confirmed the existence of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. We know, the naming schemes are a little confusing, so where does the chipset lie in the pecking order? As it turns out, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is actually inferior compared to last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 could be inferior to last year’s chipset
In a post on X by Abhishek Yadav, he revealed the ranking of Qualcomm’s chipsets. Based on his ranking, it looks like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 sits below 2024’s Snapdragon 8 Elite, making it a slightly more inferior chipset.
This is based on the current CPU and GPU configurations of the chipset. Starting with the Snapdragon 8 Elite 5, it features 2x 4.61GHz cores and 6x 3.63GHz cores, along with an Adreno 840 GPU. In second place is the 2024 Snapdragon 8 Elite. As a quick refresher, the chipset features 2x 4.32GHz cores and 6x 3.53GHz cores.
Then coming in third place is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. The chipset sports 2x 3.65GHz cores and 6x 3.32GHz cores with an Adreno 829 GPU. Then in fourth place is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. This chipset is the last to use Qualcomm’s older configuration with a 1x 3.30GHz core, 3x 3.15GHz cores, and 2x 2.96GHz cores, with an Adreno 750 GPU calling the shots on graphics.
Now, one thing to note is that it might not necessarily be fair to compare the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 against the Elite series. We know that Qualcomm switched up its naming scheme, so it might be confusing. But in reality, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is really the successor to the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4.
The “S” series, for those unfamiliar, are close in performance to Qualcomm’s flagship lineup. However, they aren’t as fast and are typically used by mid-range phones that are pushing the higher-end side of things. This doesn’t mean that they aren’t good, just that it’s not a very fair comparison.
When is it coming?
At the moment, it is unclear when the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 will launch. A recent report from tipster Digital Chat Station suggests that the chipset could launch by the end of November. The tipster also claims that OnePlus could be one of the first to use the new chipset, and that it could come in the form of the OnePlus Ace 6 Pro Max. They also suggested that Vivo could have a device using the chipset in the works.
In any case, we’re almost towards the middle of November. Hopefully the rumors pan out and we’ll have more details to share soon.
